CARING STAFF & VOLUNTEERS
The key to our excellent program is our quality staff. Our directors and counselors are carefully selected for their maturity, strong background in working with children and desire to be good Christian role models. Our dedicated team is from all over the country and around the world. They possess enthusiasm, leadership, patience, sound judgement and decision-making skills, which are crucial to every child's healthy development. The staff truly want to guide and help each child reach his or her goals as they live, eat, work and play with the campers.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF
 Rick Burris, Executive Director, holds a masters degree from the University of Minnesota at Mankato in Experiential Education and a bachelors degree in Outdoor Recreation from Missouri State University. He is also a YMCA Senior Director. He started working for the YMCA in 1986 as a Cabin Counselor and has been working at various camps ever since. His camp experience includes working four years professionally at Camp Wood YMCA in Elmdale,KS. He also spent eight years working in a therapeutic wilderness camping ministry for emotionally troubled boys in North Carolina. Rick returned to YMCA camping in October 2003 when he joined the Classen staff. Rick has been married to his wife Kate since 1996. They have 2 boys, Micah and Jonah.  Lyn Cooper, Camping and Conference Director, graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Physical Education, MS in Exercise Physiology and MS in Health Promotion. She has 24 years teaching experience with the Norman Public School District where she also coached High School swimming for 14 years. She has been actively involved with Camp Classen since the mid-eighties when the school district implemented outdoor school into the curriculum. She also served as the CIT director for 8 summers, and as a Trip Director and a Clinic Specialist for 89er Village. In January 2004 she joined the Camp Classen professional staff as the 89er Village Assistant Director and is now the Camping and Conference Director.  Russell Gholson, Equestrian Director is originally from Lovelaceville, Kentucky where he grew up working in a family business. In 1987, he went to Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky where he majored in Animal Health Technology and minored in Equine Science. He was on both the stock seat and hunt seat equestrian teams while in college. He has been working with horses for around 20 years. He has been breeding American Quarter Horses for about 10 years and likes the working cow-horse bloodlines. Before coming to camp he was an equine consultant at a feed mill in Mayfield, Kentucky. Melissa Mears, Program Director,
Originally from Emporia, KS, Melissa graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in Recreation. Her camping experience started right here at Camp Classen, as a cabin counselor in 2006. She has been a seasonal employee at camp since May of 2006 and has been a tremendous asset to camp. One of her major duties as Program Director will be serving as the Director of 89er Village in the summer.  Albert McWhorter, Director of Development, is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1972 with a BA in Sociology and Religion. Albert’s YMCA career spans over 30 years and he served as the Executive Director of Camp Classen YMCA since 1990 and stepped into his new role in November of 2007. Email:amcwhort@ymcaokc.org

Patty McMakin, Adminisrative Assistant, is from Moore, Oklahoma. Her camping experience began as a camper. She attended Camp Cimarron in Coyle, OK for five summers. She loved it so much she became a part of the staff in 1981. She worked ten summers at Camp Cimarron in many capacities ranging from Kitchen/Cabin Aide to Program Director. In 1992 She graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a BA in Recreation Leadership. She then moved to Springfield, MO, where she worked for two years as the Assistant Activities Director at a resort outside of Branson. Patty joined the Greenbriar YMCA staff as a Day Camp Counselor in May 1994. She loved it so much she became a year round staff member working in many capacities. In February 2000 she joined the Camp Classen YMCA staff in her current position of Administrative Assistant.
